The English fascination started during the time of the Grand Tour when, in Rome, aristocratic tourists saw and admired obelisks pillaged from Egypt during the time of the Caesars. The first large obelisks in England were designed by Hawksmoor in Ripon (1702) and Vanbrugh at Castle Howard (1714) – both located in North Yorkshire, like ORNAMENTI. Seemingly never out of fashion, today obelisks feature in many fine gardens and landscapes and have become icons of English garden design. Ideal for use singly as a focal point in a garden or as a pair, either side of an entrance or path. It is the style of the Georgian obelisk, incorporating a sturdy stone pedestal, that ORNAMENTI has replicated. Carved from Limestone, similar in appearance to Portland Stone, the Garden Obelisk is identical in proportion to the Landscape Obelisk with a rebated panel in one side of the pedestal only.
