England has a fine heritage for the manufacture of garden ornaments in lead, particularly during the 17th and 18th centuries when notable exponents included John Van Nost and John Cheere. At that time lead garden ornaments were considered a cost-effective alternative to carved stone for garden ornaments, often being painted.
